Renowned artist Jatin Das, born in 1941, Orissa, is a multifaceted creative force excelling in painting, sculpting, mural art, and poetry. An alumnus of JJ School of Art, mentored by Professor S.B. Palsikar, Das showcases his mastery through dynamic human figures and powerful strokes. His artistic journey began in 1962 at his art school’s gallery, marking the start of over 60 solo exhibitions and global recognition, including appearances at prestigious events like the Biennales in Paris (1971) and the Venice Art Exhibitions (1978).
Das’s oeuvre primarily revolves around the human body’s movement and energy, capturing intricate relationships, emotions, and thoughts with minimal strokes and vibrant colours. In his conversation with Tarana Khubchandani, Jatin says, “I don’t paint my canvases, I sculpt them,” evident in his large canvases with a distinctive colour palette.
Beyond painting, Das has contributed to murals and sculptures, showcasing his versatility in oil, watercolour, ink, graphics, and conté. His works adorn public and private collections worldwide, earning recognition in international auctions. Additionally, Das is a respected lecturer, advising government bodies and serving on jury panels, with notable honours including the Utkala Award (2006), Bharat Nirman Award (2007), and the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2012 from the Government of India.
