Vilas Shinde, born in Satara, Maharashtra,1953 is an artist who encounters colour theory through astounding experimentation. He completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting from JJ School of Art, Mumbai,1978 followed by a Post Diploma in Painting from MSU Baroda, 1980. He then studied painting at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts and printmaking in Paris under S.W. Hayter.
Arriving at painting from printmaking, Vilas has nuanced the colour wheel placing colours aside from each other, a complex mechanism that requires close observation. Shinde’s practice is action-based where the placement of pigments breaks the schema of painting allowing an aesthetic displacement.
The images, delineated with minimal objective details, acquire expressionistic dimensions through tonal variations of the surrounding space arabesque of beautiful textural details.
Vilas Shinde has been awarded the first prize at the 17th Maharashtra State Art Exhibition, 1976 and the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy Exhibition, Ahmedabad, 1980.
The artist lives and works in Mumbai, India.
