Tejswini Sonawane, is a printmaker from Solapur; a prolific, industrious genius with woodcuts have eclipsed the greats of Bengal school through the choice of her subject, not political but inhabit the artist herself.
Superimposing images of animals onto self-portraits, the artist contours wood to create deep forms of embrace that are metaphors of our own emotional states. Cats and birds emote with ease; they do not hide behind masks of deceit, nor do they conceal their pain, anger, or affection. Tejswini layers are acts of forgiveness that are cathartic in strange and difficult times with ourselves. Her work displays a sense of acceptance of one’s identity, so once can begin to love the self before others. Through her web-like artworks, Tejswini hopes to invoke a liberal elevation in women.
The artist lives and works in Solapur, India.
