Rabin Mondal born in Kolkata, 1929 (- 2019) was a renowned Indian painter who exploited his grotesque experiences as a youngster during tumultuous times to express his inner turmoil. He graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from Vidyasagar Art School, 1949 and co-founded the group “Calcutta Painters”.
“For me, art is an expression of my inner most self. This is the only medium I know. With my brush, oils, pencil and charcoal, I portray emotions. And before I know it, I am transported into another world. I gradually find my canvas coming alive.” – Rabin Mondal.
Mondal`s artistic temperament is figurative with bold strokes and creates tableaux journeying through bleak scapes of melancholia towards a strange world of deliverance; pure and faithful. The faces he paints are reflections of his own lostness, full of pride yet aching with solitude. A storyteller, he painted epic tales of miraculous times making him a chronicler of hope, coming from pent up emotion. Through him and his art, he remembers and embraces an entire generation.
His works were first displayed in 1955, as part of a group exhibition followed by his first solo exhibition in 1961 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata.
