The Colourful Mirage

by Rayna Arya

As a young, Indian artist, I use vibrant colours to express myself and want to introduce my non-traditional art to the world. These are a collection of the paintings and sketches that I made during the lockdown period incorporating my learnings and observations during my visit to art galleries in Amsterdam and London. Each painting or sketch is a different expression of how I was feeling at that time, and a different view of the tumultuous world we live in. I have also made use of the different colours of paints and textures to create more of an impact on the viewer and to give each of my paintings more feeling. As a victim of a hit-and-run accident in 2012, art in all forms- visual, literary, and movement- gave me a platform to express my talent and emotions.

Most of the different paintings on canvas are done using my fingers, as holding a brush is still uncomfortable for me. I also have made use of different objects such as toothbrushes, combs, tissue papers and newspapers, to create each work of art. Mainly I use charcoal sticks and acrylic paints for my different works and my inspirations are Da Vinci, Klimt, Picasso, Van Gogh and Raja Ravi Varma. My work has been previously displayed in exhibitions in Mumbai, though never to this scale.

My creativity also extends to the literary world, as I have penned a poetry novel. Eager to expand on my talents and learn, I enrolled in a painting and personal inspiration course, an open studio course and a creative writing course at the University of Art in London. These experiences have been integral in shaping the artist I am today, and I would like to extend gratitude to all the teachers, professors, and artists who have graciously helped me every step of the way.

Positive poem for art exhibition-

Overnight,

I grew up.

My life,

Barely lived, changed

And my haunting and traumatizing past,

Whose memories still bring me to tears,

Is in fact in the past,

I’m just looking ahead now.

Hope lives in my heart,

And lives deep in my soul,

Hope shines brightly in my eyes,

While I face everyday with a smile.

Hope is shaking the walls in me,

And is alive in each cell,

The sound of hope,

Is what I hear at every edge of life.

And then you say,

“ Rayna, but you can’t walk or dance or run”,

To which I say,

“I can write poetry , draw and I can paint.”

And you say,

“Rayna but look at your life now!”

And I say,

“Yes, look at it. It’s damn near perfect for me.”
