Bustling market streets, lively chatter of tea stalls, colourful festive congregations and amidst the city’s cacophony, one keen and silent spectator, observing and absorbing the microcosms of life. From: Memories is an exhibition that evinces a miscellany of canvases with caricatures and tales – a vivid jigsaw of his excursions.

Born in Patiala, Punjab, in 1949, Gurcharan studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chandigarh. Early in his career, he gained critical acclaim for his complex scenes depicting the realities of the labour class. His oeuvre goes beyond biographical representation, revealing a fervent connection to the city and its people. Later, he went on and received the National Award in 1976.

Singh’s portrayals of the people encapsulate the nuances of human emotions and relationships with depth and complexity. His works take on a life of their own as the viewers’ mind’s eye meets his tangible imaginative. To stare at his canvases is like looking outside one’s window pane, observing people in their diurnal rhythms; which are not mere colourful subjects but are imbued with life and personality, echoing a hint of humour and frivolity in the artist’s typically serious approach.

With time, he has refined his storytelling, and his works have taken on a more mature, peaceful hue. They speak of an experience garnered over age and a product of consistent practice and discipline. His works are not jaded by age or worldview; instead, they beam with positivity, reflecting his youthful soul.

Gurcharan Singh is not merely an artist or storyteller; he is a chronicler, bringing visual anthologies larger than life and inviting the viewer to pause, connect, and discover their joie de vivre.
