Arunanshu Chowdhury

Arunanshu Chowdhury was born in West Bengal in 1969. He completed his BFA and MFA in Painting from M.S. University, Baroda. In his works, he uses a combination of figurative objects both living and nonliving to convey his message.

Arunanshu has experimented with his work across multiple mediums such as acrylic on canvas, marble dust on fiberglass, and watercolor. In addition, he has also worked on sculptures, creating works at ambitious scales with subjects that surround his city, the current political environment, and personal life.

Chowdhury uses the idea of historical memory, ignited as a reaction to acts of extreme violence. His work subtly confronts the viewer with the urban violence that leaves a lingering feeling of vulnerability. Besides being inspired by the political environment, his recent works focus on the new generation, the influences of modern technology on society, and on the themes of race against time, old versus new, and tradition versus style. These works delve into the precarious nature of society, the unnatural need to belong and the resultant pressures. According to Arunanshu his art is created, “by juxtaposing several images, creating movement and a haze of memories, I have tried to animate the jumble of life, the fast pace, and the imposition of material things in my recent work.”

Arunanshu Chowdhury has been a recipient of The Elizabeth Greensheilds Foundation Award (Canada) and the Ravi Jain Foundation Award (New Delhi), both in 1995.
